“Aartech LLC” “Customer First Consult” “PC Help Techies” | Tech Support Scam | Coward runs to syskey

July 6th, 2017, I called a toll-free number (844-722-5353) that had a spam listing on Google claiming to be Norton Support, USA Support, AOL, Avast Customer Service and the list goes on. So once I called this company, I stated that there was a message on my screen that said system alert. As expected, the scammer wanted to connect to my machine and “diagnose” the issue. He had me go to the “support.me” website and download their software so he could connect to my machine over the internet. Once connected, the scammer asked basic questions such as, did I download something to get the pop-up? Am I the primary user of this computer? etc. After this, he opened event viewer and pointed out the number of NORMAL errors and logs. By the tone of his voice and the fact he pointed it out, one would insinuate that it is bad that the normal logs were listed which is false, they are completely normal logs that have no negative effect on your computer at all. Next, the scammer opens windows update and navigates to the section where “Network Access Protection” is located. He points out that it is off and says nothing more. But again, by the tone of his voice and the fact that he even pointed it out, one would insinuate that it’s a bad thing that it’s off when in reality, it isn’t. It’s normally off and should only be enabled if you are on a domain network which I am not. After this, the scammer then wanted to run a “scan” on my computer. He does a file transfer from his computer to mine. The file he transferred was a batch file titled “Microsoft Scan.” A batch file is a CMD file that when opened, will perform a series of commands in CMD that the batch file contained. This scammer used it as a fancy way of running the tree command. Once the “scan” finished, the batch file echoed pre-typed text that said that all these viruses, spyware, and Trojans were on my computer when really, they aren’t because CMD can’t scan for infections. Towards the end of the call the scammer goes on to tell me what he is going to do to “fix” the computer that doesn’t have anything wrong with it and gives me the prices for the fake services that are offered.
